Gabrielle threw her arms up for emphasis of his stupidity. “I don’t know, because you’re a human being? And caring about each other is what we’re supposed to do. But if it’s such a problem, why do you care?”

“What?”

She saw the confusion by the furrow on his brow. Good, one point for me. “Why do you care? Why do you care about someone threatening me? Scaring my employees? Making threatening phone calls? What’s it to you?”

She was on a roll now. The arrogant man. Who did he think he was, her knight in shining armor? Sorry, she’d given up on that fable a long time ago. “Well?”

“I already explained. I want to keep my job.”

“So do the staff you sent home.”

“My home’s upstairs. Besides, someone has to clean-up. I leave this mess for tomorrow and it will just snowball.”

Gabrielle shook her head.

“No, you’re not going to change the subject. This is not about work. Not about other people. This is about you and your conflicting opinions. You want me to open up and talk to you, but when the situation is reversed, it’s hands off. None of your business, stay away. Why? Is it because I’m a girl and girls can’t be strong? Girls are weak?” She had dealt with that annoying attitude with Kevin. She’d thought Theo was different. From the look in his eyes, she’d hit a nerve.

“I didn’t say that. Hell, you stood in the middle of a burning room in your pajamas. You risked your health, not to mention your life to save this place. You handle business and people with professionalism and calm even when neither is going well. You’re probably one of the strongest women I’ve ever met.”

“So what’s the problem?” she pushed. He was emotional and talking. She had to use that to her advantage. His chest rose and fell with his increased irritation. Gabrielle looked into his eyes. She needed to make sure it was irritation and not anger.

Oh my. Did she really see what she thought?

“You,” he said, taking a step closer.

Gabrielle forced herself not to back away.

“You’re the problem. Your stubborn determination. Your damn the torpedoes full speed ahead attitude. Your compassionate gray-green eyes.”

He reached out and stroked his thumb over her cheekbone. Gabrielle couldn’t and didn’t want to stop herself from leaning into his hand. She wasn’t disappointed when his fingers grazed her ear and tunneled into her hair cupping the base of her skull.

“Your soft skin.”

Every inch closer he came his voice got lower and huskier.

“Your damned pink lips,” he said the second before his mouth closed over hers.

His hold on her head pulled her up to her tip-toes. Gabrielle went gladly. The heat from his lips sped through her entire body. Her hands slid over his chef coat, around his neck and into that glorious mane of brown hair. She pulled him closer. He didn’t resist.
